West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday that Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal wanted to resign voluntarily, but she would not be able to accept it until the end of the Durga Puja festival next month.

The commissioner’s resignation is one of the demands of junior doctors protesting the rape and death of a colleague at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

“Police Commissioner came to me for his resignation…” How can I accept this before Durga Puja? Banerjee urged the striking doctors to return to work and encouraged them to “get back to celebrating” as Durga Puja approaches.

“I request you to return to the festivities and demand that the CBI completes its investigation as soon as possible,” according to him.

The CBI is probing the rape and murder of a junior doctor, who was found dead in a seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The tragedy sent shockwaves across the country, and young doctors in West Bengal are looking into the matter. Since then the strike.

Mamata Navanne spoke and offered to meet the protesters. “They can come in groups of five or six and talk to me. I am ready to listen to their demands. “The health secretary has already met them and implemented all their demands,” he said.

The chief minister said his government did not take any action even after protesters started using microphones late at night. “Every day, in the name of agitation, they use their (microphones). People are upset. The sick and old are suffering. Yet, we have not taken any action,” Banerjee said.

 

He had earlier this month rejected the Centre’s argument in the Supreme Court that the West Bengal government was not cooperating in providing facilities to CISF soldiers posted in the RG Cor. “We have given them everything; what else can we do? We are unable to even supply them with clothing. He accused the Center and several Left parties of conspiring together.

He also denied allegations of evidence tampering, saying, “We have no sacred cows to protect.”

The chief minister denied allegations that the government had asked the victim’s kin to accept financial aid. “Some people accuse me of talking about money. “I never said that…,” he said.

 

Regarding his meeting with the deceased doctor’s parents on August 12, he said: “I informed the parents that if they have a plan to honor their daughter’s memory, our government will support them. “I know what to say in this situation.”

During the administrative review meeting, the chief minister reportedly took steps to streamline the functioning of government hospitals.

Banerjee on Monday directed Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam to convene a meeting with the officials of all medical institutions and hospitals next Thursday as well as prepare a list of top doctors practicing in private hospitals.

He also ordered the removal of politicians from the heads of patient welfare committees (Rogi Kalyan Samiti) in state-run medical institutes and hospitals.

“Corporations, appoint hospital principals or superintendents as chairpersons of patient welfare societies,” he told the health secretary. All patient welfare societies currently have chairpersons of MLAs.

The Chief Minister said that police will be present at the outposts, but personal security should be responsible for overall hospital security. “They should be blacklisted if they commit any misdemeanor while on duty,” he said.
